Taking Advantage of Every Experience and Opportunity on Campus

Preparing to enter her senior year, Lauren Fowler (‘26) has fully embraced the opportunity and ability to participate in everything that interests her at Southern Virginia University, both in her studies and extracurriculars.
“I love that at Southern Virginia University, you can do everything,” Fowler said. “Because it’s a small school, you get the chance to be well-rounded. I can be involved in sports, take on leadership roles, and also gain hands-on work experience all at once. It really allows you to develop in so many different areas.”
From Saratoga Springs, Utah, Fowler is pursuing a degree in Spanish, education, and international relations with the goal of becoming a Spanish teacher and leading study abroad trips for her students. She is also a member of the women’s soccer and track teams, the Spanish honor society, and Omicron Delta Kappa, is the executive secretary for the Student Government Association, and works at the university’s mail center and Financial Aid office.

“It felt like a place I could call home, but also had this sense of excitement. I knew I could do so many things here,” said Fowler. “I’ve been encouraged to push myself, and I’m always surrounded by people who believe in me. Whether through prayer, conversations with professors, or moments of reflection, I know I’m in the right place.”
Fowler first heard about Southern Virginia University through a high school friend who was planning to attend to play soccer and encouraged Fowler to do the same. After researching the University, Fowler found herself drawn to the unique, close-knit environment.
“One of my favorite things has been attending all of the student life activities on campus,” said Fowler. “It’s so fun, but it’s also a great way to meet people and make deeper connections. The fact that people stick around on weekends, unlike at large state schools, where students often go home, makes the community feel more unified. It’s exciting because everyone is here and we can all be part of something together.”

In addition to her academic, extracurricular, and leadership roles, Fowler credits the supportive environment and professors at Southern Virginia for helping her develop a deep love and appreciation for teachers and further her commitment to become one.
“One of my most impactful classes was Foundations of Education with Professor Jordan Clark,” said Fowler. “It was eye-opening to learn about the complexities of the education system in the U.S. and how much potential there is for growth. The class sparked a deep interest in how education impacts students, and I’m excited to be a part of that change as a future teacher.”
