How Anja Fisher is Blending Science and the Gospel in Her Journey to Cardiology

Anja Fisher (‘28), a biology major from Norman, Oklahoma, has her sights set on a future in cardiology. Her interest in heart health grew from her love of running and a deep appreciation for the human body and what it’s capable of.
“I’m really fascinated by the human body, and the gift of having a healthy heart is something I’m grateful for in my life,” Fisher shared. “I feel like the heart is the center of everything. Whenever you run and you feel like you’re getting healthier, your brain feels better—your entire body actually feels better.”
Fisher was introduced to Southern Virginia University by her older sister, Elina, who is a senior at SVU. After hearing about her sister’s positive experience at and love for the school, Fisher decided to explore it herself. A campus visit quickly confirmed that the atmosphere and location were the right fit for her, and she transferred from the University of Oklahoma.
Since arriving, Fisher has come to appreciate how academics and the gospel naturally connect on campus and in the classroom. From weekly forums to ward prayers, she values an environment where science and spirituality are interconnected–not conflicted.
“In my classes I love that we’ll be talking about something very academic, and then it connects to something spiritual,” she said. “You don’t have to choose between academics and religion. You’re able to choose both and realize it’s all very interconnected.”
One of Fisher’s favorite classes has been chemistry with Dr. Barbara Van Kuiken, whom she describes as a “ball of knowledge and energy.” She also appreciates the time and effort professors put into teaching students inside and outside the classroom.
“At large schools like the University of Oklahoma, it can be hard to find tutors who are able to help you for long periods of time,” Fisher explained. “Here, I’ve been able to spend a lot of time with tutors and professors, and basically ask unlimited questions. I’ve learned so much since coming here because they’re genuinely excited to help me succeed.”
Her chemistry coursework has been especially meaningful. “Getting to look at chemistry through both a scientific and spiritual lens really changes how I see it,” she said. “Learning about all the intricate details of our bodies confirms to me that God really knew what He was doing when He created us.”
Fisher stays active beyond the classroom as a member of the university’s dance team and the local run club, and she enjoys the chance to live with her sister during her final year at SVU. That balance of study, family, and faith has shaped her experience and continues to influence how she approaches her education.
